Rise of the Filmmakers
Apr 2011 21

Hey everyone!

Since Kåseberga was released almost two weeks ago we’ve got a big number of comments and e-mails concerning the film. The English subtitled version is still on its way, but have been pushed back a bit due to school and other projects with close deadlines nearing. Times really are good right now for both filmmaking in general, with technical innovations as well as a much bigger demand and popularity in amateur films. With the release of the HDSLRs a few years ago (i.e. the Canon 7D, which we shot Harry Spexter on) great high definition is now available for almost everyone at a considerably lower price point. With the release of these cheaper, more agile cameras I’ve myself found a big upspring in shooting short films and planning for future projects a lot more, and while I don’t pretend to have been in this industry for a long time I really feel that the new smaller cameras have really helped me with making a lot more stuff as well. Sure, they have their limitations – all cameras do, be it features or price – but as the industry moves forward in the next few years I can’t wait to be able to combine the quality of the RED camera (which we shot a rugby commercial a week ago – more on that further down) with the agility of a small stills camera. We’re seeing the Red Epic move into the market right now, and as we’re currently in pre-production of our first big short film this summer, we are seriously looking into it.

Summer is here, and it feels really good and exciting. As more sun hours arrive, more shoot hours comes with it – as I’m moving away (not very far) during the summer I have a few ideas of really doing a lot of fun short films as tests during some weeks and uploading them to YouTube. Nothing set in stone yet though, but it’d be a fun experience, and one that could gel well with the company expanding with some new faces in the upcoming months.

As I mentioned earlier, we did shoot a commercial for the high schools in Malmö for an upcoming rugby tournament at the end of May. We shot the whole film at 120 frames per second, which means it’ll probably look pretty amazing – basically the whole (pretty short) commercial is in slow-motion, and we have some pretty cool shots combined with some speed-ramping. As I’m on the countryside during the entire easter holiday, I’m not able to show you some of the footage. The film is set to be finished on next Wednesday though, so I imagine it’ll be online soon after that!

We also shot a small event video for a local club here in Malmö three weeks ago. The event was organized by meEvents, and had a “sexy” theme, being titled meSexy. The film was edited during the weekend and released online a week after the event, and people really liked it based on comments on Facebook and YouTube. While it’s a big step from the Kåseberga documentary released just after it, I was quite happy with the editing of it and it’s always good to have some diversity, try out different types of films for different occasions. I also did some experimenting with Adobe After Effects for the titles of the film, using both plug-ins from Video Co-Pilot as well as Red Giant Software. Grading using Magic Bullet Colorista II. The film is embedded below:

Stay tuned for more updates in the coming weeks! Take care everyone!
